Craig’s has been the most talked about and relevant return to music by an artist in decades. 16 years after his debut album reached Number 1, Craig is back at the top. With his latest album, Following My Intuition going straight to Number 1 in the Official Albums Chart when released last year.

Sixteen years since the critically-acclaimed Born To Do It changed his life, Craig catapulted back into the charts and into the nation’s hearts over the last year. Craig has since leapt from strength to strength on our airwaves, and has been unavoidable on our TV screens and on the live circuit ever since.

Add to that a headline TS5 tour which sold-out in seconds, selling out shows all over the globe, over 1.5 million singles sales and 117 million singles streams worldwide, a 2017 BRIT Award nomination and winning the prestigious MOBO award for Best Male Act, it would be an understatement to say that the last year has been anything short of monumental for Craig.

The Merthyr Tydfil concert follows a sold out 18-date arena tour in March and April and a record breaking ten week summer residency with his TS5 Pool Party at Ibiza Rocks Hotel.

Expect to hear all the Craig David classics plus songs from his latest album Following My Intuition. A celebration of one of the UK’s most loved artists, back on British soil, and at the helm of his own unique, authentically British sound. A sound that made waves across the globe, making him one of the most successful artists in UK chart history, speaking to a new generation who are listening with fresh ears and sparking euphoric nostalgia in fans that have waited for his return...

Chief Executive of Merthyr Tydfil Leisure Trust, Richard Marsh said: “We are thrilled to be working with Orchard Entertainment staging another superb event at Cyfarthfa Park this year. As a Trust this is another great opportunity for us to put Merthyr Tydfil on the map and we look forward to welcoming visitors to the Park for this exciting event in the summer.”

The concert is promoted by Wales’ largest independent Promoter, Orchard Entertainment, the current UK Regional Promoter of the Year, who have staged a number of gigs in Cyfarthfa Castle grounds over the years, including Madness last summer. Orchard’s Dave Driscoll said: “Craig David is a massive star, as last year’s return really showed, so we’re fortunate to get him this summer. Cyfarthfa Castle is a terrific setting for live music, as we’ve proved over the years, so August 5th should be very special.”

Merthyr Leisure FitKidz Team are again celebrating another hugely successful half term with more than 100 children turning out each day of the programme to enjoy fun sporting activities at Merthyr Leisure Centre, now run by Merthyr Tydfil Leisure Trust.

The team, headed by popular FitKidz coordinator Lisa Jones, exceeded all targets with their morning sports sessions for 3-4 year old’s and their Soccer Extravaganza Camp for 5-16 year old’s.

Today, on the last day of half term activity, Lisa and her team were delighted to award certificates, medals and trophies to those who took part.

Lisa, who coordinates the weekly Fitkidz programme at Merthyr Leisure Centre as well as regular half term activities, said: “We are absolutely delighted with the number of children who came along to join in with our sessions- it’s been a great week and everyone has enjoyed.

New Library Hub at Merthyr Leisure Centre

Merthyr Tydfil Library Service has been awarded a £100,000 grant from CyMAL: Museums, Archives and Libraries Wales, funding new plans to make the Library Service more accessible than ever before.

The Library team, which is also now managed by the Merthyr Tydfil Leisure Trust, are set to expand on the success of their pilot project, the Library Hub, which was introduced into Merthyr Leisure Centre in August 2015.

Ruth Library

Providing loan services, a weekly reading group and IT sessions, the Library Hub saw membership increase significantly with more than 200 new customers joining Merthyr Tydfil Library Service in the first four months. Benefits to new customers included seven day extended opening hours, free parking and a café area onsite while Merthyr Tydfil Library Service were also able to link in with the various classes and activities for children and adults already taking place at the popular Trust-run Centre.

The team now plan to build on this success using the new funding to expand the Hub as a multi-functional Library area. The new development will offer a greater range and number of books to borrow, a PC suite for IT sessions and drop in use and a better space for visitors to relax, socialise or take part in organised Library activities.

And it will be business as usual at Merthyr Central Library with customers still able to access the same services and activities as before.

Principal Librarian Jane Sellwood, said: “We are delighted that thanks to Welsh Government we will now be able to move forward with our plans to develop the Library service to better meet the needs of people living in Merthyr and visiting Merthyr.

“While we will continue to provide services at the current Central Library we recognise that the lack of a customer lift means all our services are not accessible to all our visitors.

“Merthyr Leisure Centre provides an ideal opportunity for us to change this and we are looking forward to working with our Leisure Trust colleagues in Leisure to engage more people with our services.

Merthyr Tydfil Library Service has already seen the benefits of linking in with Leisure Services with the introduction of Aberfan Library at Aberfan and Merthyr Vale Community Centre.

A successful refurbishment of the Aberfan Library venue saw a 33.3% increase in Library visits and the Library now hosts a popular programme of events and activities for the whole community.

October 4th 2016

I’ve lost weight but gained myself’- That’s the message from fitness instructor Glyn Culliford who celebrates two years delivering his popular Booty Shakers classes at Merthyr Leisure Centre after an inspiring fitness journey all of his own.

Glyn, 40, a former professional dancer, began gaining weight and worrying about his health after giving up work to become a full time carer back in 2014.

After raising concerns with his GP he was referred to take part in the National Exercise Referral Scheme (NERS) which is funded by Welsh Government to support people at risk of chronic disease to build more physical activity into their lives.

Delivered by a specialist team at Merthyr Leisure Centre and Aberfan and Merthyr Vale Community Centre, both now managed by the Merthyr Tydfil Leisure Trust, NERS promotes fun, gentle activity such as Aqua Aerobics, Zumba and Easy Circuit classes and over a 16 week period got Glyn back on the path to fitness.

So inspired was he to help others achieve their fitness goals that, with the support of Merthyr Tydfil Leisure Trust, he gained his instructor qualification and started delivering fitness dance classes for the Trust at Merthyr Leisure Centre. Two years on Booty Shakers is as popular as ever welcoming more than 50 people each week. (Tuesdays and Thursdays 6-7pm)

“As someone who has really benefited from getting back into regular exercise I wanted Booty Shakers to be a class where people could relax and exercise at their own speed”, says Glyn, of Castle Park, Merthyr.

“It is really rewarding when people who come to Booty Shakers tell me that they feel healthier and have more self-confidence because of the classes.  As someone who lost weight but gained themselves, I understand how that feels and that’s why, two years on, our focus is still on fitness through having fun.

“We have so much fun as a group and I am delighted that Booty Shakers has become so popular.

“I hope it will continue to support people to get fitter and feel healthier into the future.”

If you are inspired by Glyn’s story and would like to take part in the National Exercise Referral Scheme you will need to be referred by a fully qualified health professional, such as your local doctor, practice nurse or physiotherapist.

Once you are referred, an Exercise Professional at Merthyr Leisure Centre or Aberfan and Merthyr Vale Community Centre will meet with you to find out a little more about your health history, carry out some basic health checks and discuss the range of activities that are suitable for you. They will then continue to help and support you throughout the scheme.  As part of the scheme you will benefit from:

  • A consultation and subsequent check- ups with a fully qualified exercise professional
  • A variety of activities at a discounted price for the 16 weeks you are on the scheme
  • The option of a discounted membership afterwards
