New Library Hub at Merthyr Leisure Centre
Merthyr Tydfil Library Service has been awarded a £100,000 grant from CyMAL: Museums, Archives and Libraries Wales, funding new plans to make the Library Service more accessible than ever before.
The Library team, which is also now managed by the Merthyr Tydfil Leisure Trust, are set to expand on the success of their pilot project, the Library Hub, which was introduced into Merthyr Leisure Centre in August 2015.
Providing loan services, a weekly reading group and IT sessions, the Library Hub saw membership increase significantly with more than 200 new customers joining Merthyr Tydfil Library Service in the first four months. Benefits to new customers included seven day extended opening hours, free parking and a café area onsite while Merthyr Tydfil Library Service were also able to link in with the various classes and activities for children and adults already taking place at the popular Trust-run Centre.
The team now plan to build on this success using the new funding to expand the Hub as a multi-functional Library area. The new development will offer a greater range and number of books to borrow, a PC suite for IT sessions and drop in use and a better space for visitors to relax, socialise or take part in organised Library activities.
And it will be business as usual at Merthyr Central Library with customers still able to access the same services and activities as before.
Principal Librarian Jane Sellwood, said: “We are delighted that thanks to Welsh Government we will now be able to move forward with our plans to develop the Library service to better meet the needs of people living in Merthyr and visiting Merthyr.
“While we will continue to provide services at the current Central Library we recognise that the lack of a customer lift means all our services are not accessible to all our visitors.
“Merthyr Leisure Centre provides an ideal opportunity for us to change this and we are looking forward to working with our Leisure Trust colleagues in Leisure to engage more people with our services.
Merthyr Tydfil Library Service has already seen the benefits of linking in with Leisure Services with the introduction of Aberfan Library at Aberfan and Merthyr Vale Community Centre.
A successful refurbishment of the Aberfan Library venue saw a 33.3% increase in Library visits and the Library now hosts a popular programme of events and activities for the whole community.
